2017 January Car of the Month
On December 1, 1993, Dad took Mom out to dinner for her birthday. After dinner, he asked if she’d like to stop by the Ford dealership to see the new 1994 Mustang. (30th Anniversary Edition).
Mom had owned a 1966 Mustang GT Convertible, 4-spd, Emberglo with white top and Pony interior… that years later, my Brother totaled. She loved that car; so she agreed to go see the new ’94 Mustangs at the dealership.
When they arrived there, a new Laser Red Mustang Convertible 5-spd, white leather interior and white top, was center stage in the showroom. The salesman approached Mom and asked if she liked the car. She said, “Yes. I used to have a ’66 and loved it.”
The salesman then asked if she would like to have this ’94, and handed her the keys. Sensing a sales pitch, she said, “Thank you, but we just came to look at the new Mustangs.” and gave him back the keys.
“That’s too bad,” said the salesman. “Because it’s actually your car. That man standing over there (Dad) just bought it for you yesterday. Happy Birthday.” She tearfully accepted the keys.
Mom loved that Mustang, treating like a new-born baby. If it even looked cloudy, it stayed in the garage. She hand-washed herself, not wanting to risk a scratch at the car wash. Her favorite saying about it was, “If you think it looks good, you should hear the engine!”
At 17,453 miles, when she could no longer drive, she handed me the keys and said, “I know that you’ll take care of this for me.” Today, it has 23,363 miles on it. If it looks cloudy, it stays in the garage.
Motor upgrades: a 1994 Cobra upper/lower intake, BBK Cold Air Intake, 70mm throttle body, 76mm Mass Air Meter/Sensor, MSD Ignition Module & Distributor. Magnaflow Catbacks.
Suspension upgrades: Eibach Pro System Handling/Lowering Package w/Anti-Sway bars; Steeda Caster/Camber Plates and Subframe Connectors; BBK Strut Tower Brace.
Wheels/Tires: Cobra R 5-spoke Chrome 17” wheels with Goodyear Eagle F1 tires;
Mom would have liked it. And you should hear the engine.
