Car of the Month May 2023

Gene’s 1968 Mustang coupe.

Hi.  I’m a 1968 Mustang coupe.  I am a fairly run-of-the-mill car, made in San Jose, CA, in June of ’68 with a 289 V-8, A/T, and P/S, Deluxe Interior, and a 2.79 rear gear ratio.  Yeah, yeah, yeah, I’m slow.  But, while I won’t be getting there quickly, I will be getting there in style!  HA!

I don’t remember much of my early years, don’t know how I ended up in Colorado.  But, on January 1, 1987, my then owner signed me over to my current caretaker.  In those early years, we drove back and forth across the country quite a bit for school and work.  After all that gallivanting around the country, we ended up in Austin.

While I’d like to claim I’m all original, I’m not.  So, I won’t.  I’ve needed some wrenching over the years to fix stuff that didn’t last much more than 200,000 miles (you know, early life fails):  I’ve had my engine, transmission, suspension, and steering rebuilt at various times, and I now have 4-wheel disc brakes instead of my original 4 drums.

I now have a little over 340,000 miles on the ol’ odometer:  almost through the break-in period.

(here’s a pic the caretaker found of me in my younger days in the late ‘80s, when I still had paint – yeah, that’s right, paint or no paint, I look good!  Again, HA!)
