Car of The Month March 2023

I found this 1968 GT350 in Austin in June of 1978, she was listed for sale in the Austin American Statesman classified want ads. She had about 120,000 miles on her and the over all condition was a little rough, but all the parts were there. I drove the car on weekends mostly, and used her to pull my Hobie 16 catamaran to the lake.

In about 1984, my wife and I decided it was time to fix her up, the plan was to repair and repaint the body, replace the upholstery and install a new convertible top. The body work was started, then in early 1985 we found out we were going to become parents, so the work on the car stopped and she went into storage at a very good friend of mine’s place. Our daughter was born in December 1985, then our son was born in April 1988 and we lived the life of happy parents with two young children for several years.

In 1992 we decided it was time to get back to working on this car. She was pulled out of storage (the brakes were all locked up, so she was really dragged out). She was repainted Highland Green and the interior was updated with new upholstery and a new top was installed. I joined MOCA in about 1995, I think the interior install was still in progress the first time I drove the car to a MOCA event.

We have enjoyed this car ever since, our daughter and son had their first driving lessons in this car. And our son used this car as the get away vehicle at his wedding in 2019. I try to keep the car as original as I can, but the interior was changed from black to saddle (black is just too hot in Texas summers).

Thanks,

Don and Kim Metz
